9 Days: Cycle Turkey, a unique adventure cycling holiday in Cappadocia

Details:

Day 1: Meet at the group hotel in Urgup. Transfers from Kayseri and Nevsehir Airports are provided.

Meet at the group hotel in Urgup. Transfers from Kayseri (and Nevsehir) airports to the group hotel are provided for all flights. The local guide or a representative of our agent will meet you in the arrivals hall at the airport. KE Land Only services begin with the evening meal.

Day 2: Ride the Uzenghi Valley to Ortahisar Castle. Traditional village tour and downhill return to Urgup.
After breakfast at our hotel, we will have a quick briefing about the forthcoming trip and then assemble our bikes. Mid-morning, we will set off, firstly on tarmac and then on a good dirt track. This first stage of our exploration takes us out to the valley of the Uzengi River and the village of Ortahisar. It takes about an hour to reach this charming settlement, with its picturesque castle and surrounding vineyards. Our local guide will make arrangements for our lunch in a restaurant, while we visit the castle. Ortahisar is a typical farming village, where harvested citrus fruits are still stored in caves in the surrounding cliffs. After lunch, there is a good downhill ride, with some sand traps. After a total of around 20 kilometers biking, most of these off-road, we arrive back at the hotel in Urgup. This afternoon’s ride will act as a good warm-up for the following days and will give everyone a feel for the terrain and topography through which we will be riding. In the evening, we will take dinner at a local restaurant, before spending our second night in Urgup.
DISTANCE20km
TIME2 - 3 hrs cycling

Day 3: Leaving Urgup, cycle the ‘Love Valley’ to the troglodyte town of Uchisar in the heart of Cappadocia.
Today, we leave Urgup for a full day of biking. Riding alongside the Damsa, a tributary of the Red River, we reach Sarihan. Here, we can see a traditional caravanserai, which was built to house and protect traders traveling overland between Central Asia and Europe. We take lunch at our next stop, Avanos, which has been a center for terracotta pottery since 3000 BC. We can visit one of the potteries, which is situated in a cave and have a go – it’s not as easy as it looks. Leaving Avanos, we head out to Cavusin, the site of the oldest Christian building in Cappadocia. We will continue our ride through 'Love Valley,' which is so-called because of its distinctly phallic rock towers. Our overnight stop is in a hotel in the troglodyte (cave-dwellers) town of Uchisar, situated in the heart of Cappadocia.
DISTANCE30km
TIME2 - 3 hrs cycling

Day 4: Cycle south to the rocky spires and caves of the Sognali Region. Transfer back Uchisar.
After breakfast, we head southwards to Soganli, an area famed for its Open Air Museum and wild, natural setting. En route, we pass through numerous villages and see a variety of caves and rock spires. The day starts out on the tarmac and then tracks between fields, with a couple of short descents and ascents. We gain a ridge, which affords some varied, but not difficult riding conditions, before descending to follow field tracks to Kavak Village, where we have a tea stop. A good place to watch life go by. Beyond the village, the terrain feels more remote and barren. Again, this is a nice change and we enjoy a gradual descent to lunch in a local café, with a Wild West atmosphere. After lunch, we drop into a gorge and follow this on rough tracks for 8-10km/5-6 miles. The table-top mountains we can see ahead of us during late afternoon indicate that Soganli is just a manageable distance away. We then transfer back to our accommodation in Uchisar.
DISTANCE45km
TIME3 - 4 hrs cycling

Day 5: Transfer to Sognali and ride to Derinkuyu for subterranean city exploration. Drive onto Guzelyurt.
We begin the day with a transfer back to Soganli. From here, the start of our ride involves a short, but tough climb out of the gorge on a sandy road. Then, it is a long level ride across the plains and through the fields to the village of Orhanli. In contrast to other villages we’ve passed so far, Orhanli is altogether more primitive and gives an insight into the harsh life of the inhabitants of the high Anatolian Plateau. Leaving Orhanli, we continue westward to reach Derinkuyu in the early afternoon. After lunch at a local restaurant, we will visit the famous underground city and then have an afternoon’s ride to the base of Gollu Dag, a 2143 meter high volcano that is one of the biggest peaks in the area. This ride will take us to Komurcu Village via several other settlements, including Kiledere and Yazihoyuk. Komurcu is a pleasant, small village on the slopes of Gollu Dag. For those who still have energy to spare, there is the option to ascend Gollu Dag and to see ancient Hittite ruins. We then transfer to Guzelyurt, where we stay in a characterful hotel.
DISTANCE60km
TIME3 - 4 hrs cycling

Day 6: Today there is the option of independent exploration of Guzeyurt by bike or on foot.
Today, we have the chance to take it easy in Guzelyurt. If you fancy a day off the bikes, you can do that – take a stroll through the lively streets of the town and see its homes built into man-made caves. Or, take a hike into the Monastery Valley and visit the cave churches. You could even go fishing at a nearby lake or just relax at the hotel with a book. The guide will take those who wish on a 10-kilometer ride around town, on quiet roads and dirt tracks. He will also be happy to give advice to anyone fancying a longer ride. We spend a second night in Guzelyurt.

Day 7: A day of exciting paths and trails through Ihlara Canyon and across Mt Kucuk Hasan. Return to Urgup.
In the morning, we ride via Alanyurt to Selime, where we begin our descent to the Ihlara Canyon. Locally known as the 'Valley of the Sky', the canyon is home to several beautifully decorated, rock-cut churches, some of them occupying the most unlikely crevices. It is also home to the most technical mountain biking of the trip. There is some great riding, but also plenty of carrying bikes up and down narrow paths shrouded in thorny vegetation. We’ll lunch at Belisirma and then after 14 kilometers of this action, or an easier optional hike, we reach Ihlara Village, where we leave the canyon. From here, we will make a crossing of the Kucuk Hasan Mountain, on a good, wide dirt road, which will take us through Kitreli to Ulukisla. The gradient of the climb to the high point of this ride starts out easily but steepens towards the top. A superb downhill ride then takes us to Ulukisla on the other side of the mountain, where we are picked up for the drive to our hotel in Urgup. After checking in at the group hotel, there may be time for us to go to the Turkish Baths or Hammam. Later, we head out into town to a local restaurant for our evening meal.
DISTANCE65km
TIME5 - 6 hrs cycling

Day 8: Day ride to the historical site of Goreme and through the Red Valley to conclude this Turkish Delight!
Our last full day of riding involves a circuit through some of the most important sights in Cappadocia, around Goreme. Goreme is a large, verdant, natural amphitheater surrounded by steep cliffs. There is an excellent descent into the valley, on steep trails between the rock pillars. Quite remarkable! Here, amongst the cliff walls can be found numerous caves, once one of the most important early Christian monastic settlements. The Goreme open-air museum is worth a visit. We continue our ride on tarmac and dirt roads, through spectacular natural and man-made rock architecture, to Zelve. We also enjoy a 4-kilometer singletrack ride through the Red Valley, which is one of the highlights of the trip. We end with a visit to the market in Urgup, which is one of the best you will ever see, with fantastically colorful produce stalls.
